My Life With Amazing Strangers – Dr Suzanne Zeedyk – ‘Fierce Curiosity’: Hospital Care for Children

When a child goes into hospital, how important is it that a mum or dad can stay? The answer may feel obvious to us, but in the 1950s, this was a controversial question. In this episode of Fierce Curiosity, we meet Pete Kinnear, who was a child coping with hospital at that time. He’s in conversation with mum Shelley Gray, whose daughter recently had a stay in hospital. Their comparative stories, gently encouraged by co-host Suzanne Zeedyk, give us powerful insights into this really important question about how best to children’s needs for care.

My Life With Amazing Strangers – Dr Suzanne Zeedyk – ‘Fierce Curiosity’: Corporal Punishment

Emily Laranja is the Nurture Teacher at Lynburn Primary in Fife, Scotland. Frankie Larkin was a child in Scottish schools from the mid-1960s. He felt regularly humiliated by teachers in Primary School and was belted regularly during Secondary. As a consequence of feeling stupid and scared, he did not learn to read until he was in his 30s. In this podcast with Dr Suzanne Zeedyk, Frankie looks back on his experiences now with curiosity and insight. His story of what happened is, to many curious minds, painful and shocking – and ordinary for its day. Emily reflects on Frankie’s story and gives her professional viewpoint as a modern, forward-thinking, trauma-informed educator. Dr Suzanne Zeedyk is a developmental psychologist and research scientist, she is fascinated by the many topics that make up the Science of Connection. She believes that everyone deserves to share in the discoveries that scientists are making about the importance of relationships.
